Comments on: Cropping is your friend

The before photo looks like it’s already been cropped into something like a 5:4 ratio. Most cameras do not capture images in such a dimension.

The after crop is more like 4:6 ratio.

Comment on the crop. I like the deeper saturation. And I like the crop – but I also like the before, and this is why – that errant bit of hair gives me the feeling of air moving, which supports the emotional and sensory context of the photo.

Amy, I can’t tell you how helpful you’ve been to me. I have been a camera human all my life, taught labs at University, have shot a few weddings – but mainly, I’ve always loved taking images. It’s a heart thing, as you understand. I’ve only begun to catch the vision of this digital stuff, and it leaves me almost breathless. Kids are grown now, and I find myself wanting to package up the years, make sure the memories are preserved and handed down. And without you, I really might not have had the courage to sit down and get serious about it.

My daughter, to whom I gave cameras the way I’d give her long life or good health, is also beginning to practice the art. And surprise! She’s good. http://lifekunst.blogspot.com/ I’m going to send her to you to read all this stuff you’re doing.
